Another challenge to the Affordable Care Act has transpired as two appeals courts issued dueling rulings on the use of government subsidies on the federal health exchange. While the courts work out the details, it’s important for consumers to understand them in simpler terms.
For starters, a subsidy is financial assistance that lowers the amount of your monthly premium. An exchange is an online marketplace where individuals and small businesses can compare and purchase health insurance.
At issue in the courts is whether individuals who purchase coverage on the federal exchange can receive government subsidies. It’s important to know that New York state’s exchange, the NY State of Health, and how it operates should not be affected.
The contradictory rulings, which came just hours apart, will likely take months (if not longer) to resolve. In the meantime, it is our goal at CDPHP® is to ensure quality coverage for our current and future members.
