When is a race not a race? When it’s a challenge – as in the 2017 CDPHP® Workforce Team Challenge. At this point, you are probably wondering what in the world I am talking about. Let me explain.
Yes, the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge is technically a race. There’s a start line and a finish line, as well as an official race course. Participants are timed and there is a winner. So what makes it different from other races? A lot, actually.

First, the 3.5-mile road race isn’t just about who crosses the finish line first. It’s about you crossing that line and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you do. You can be first or last – it doesn’t matter as long as you do it!
You don’t have to be a seasoned runner to take part. The event is open to people of all fitness levels. Many don’t run at all. Lots of joggers and walkers are mixed in among the thousands of participants.
Secondly, the event is about camaraderie. Since this is a “corporate challenge,” the teams are made up of employees from businesses and organizations from throughout the region. It’s a wonderful opportunity for co-workers to come together outside of business hours for a bit of healthy competition and a lot of fun.
Finally, and most importantly, the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge is about building stronger communities. The event, which is organized by the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club (HMRRC), serves as a fundraiser for the club, as well as for local nonprofits chosen by the club. This year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany and Vanderheyden will receive funding support.
Race participants are encouraged to make a donation when they sign up, and with 10,000 registrants, every dollar makes a difference! In fact, if each person donates $2 to the charities, we could raise $20,000!
Donations to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany will benefit the organization’s Healthy Habits and Positive Sprouts program, which teaches club members healthy eating habits through growing their own produce and using it to prepare healthy snacks and well-balanced meals. The program is aimed at reducing childhood obesity and offers lifelong lessons that youth can share with family and friends.
Vanderheyden will use the donations to create Sanctuary Trails, a natural retreat nestled among the 80 wooded acres of the organization’s Wynantskill property. The trails will be available for public use and will provide a quiet place for users to take a meditative walk and enjoy numerous fitness activities, such as hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and more.
The race also helps underwrite many of HMRRC’s activities and offerings, including college scholarships, grants, free races for members, and the Just Run® Program, which encourages grade-school children to run for exercise and fun.
Sounds awesome, right? So why not challenge yourself? Get your co-workers together and sign up today at http://www.cdphpwtc.com/. We’ll see you at the finish line!
