Are your running shoes ready? Whether you’re gearing up for a fast run or are more comfortable with a brisk walk, the Freihofer’s® 36th Run for Women is coming soon! The event will take place Saturday, May 31 at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. Also scheduled for that weekend is the CapitalCare/CDPHP® Health & Fitness Expo. Head to the plaza anytime Friday, May 30 from noon to 7 p.m. or Saturday, May 31 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to partake in a variety of family-friendly health and fitness activities.
Sponsored by the CapitalCare Medical Group, CDPHP, orthoNY, and the New York Beef Council and featuring live music on the plaza and entertainment for kids, the Expo has something for everyone and is a fun, family-friendly way to learn more about your own health and how to encourage your family’s healthy habits.
Healthy demonstrations
The Health & Fitness Expo will offer various health screenings and feature fitness and wellness vendors, as well as massage therapy and fitness demos. While a massage sounds relaxing, especially before or after the run, there are real health benefits, as well. Especially for avid runners, a sports massage or deep tissue massage can help ease muscle pain resulting from sports injuries.
Fitness experts will also be on hand to answer questions and discuss common mistakes people make when trying new exercises.
Health screenings
Curious about your body mass index (BMI)? Or body fat percentage? A variety of vendors will perform body fat analyses; BMI, diabetes, cardiac risk, and asthma assessments; and check for other conditions. The best-case scenario is that you find out you’re in great shape; the worst case is you discover a risk factor that spurs you to visit your doctor. For most of the medical conditions for which these screenings are designed, there are lifestyle changes that may make a huge difference for your future.
A win for local non-profits
Local nonprofit organizations are eagerly anticipating the event. Shari Piper, who coordinates the Albany Capital District Walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research along with her husband Neil, says that the Health Expo is a great way to increase public awareness of the many nonprofit organizations in the area. For the Pipers, the fight against pancreatic cancer is personal— Neil’s parents and siblings died from the disease—and they are dedicated to increasing funding for research and encouraging early detection. Their table at the Health Expo will enable them to get their message out to the public and generate interest in their walk, which takes place annually in September.
Conversations with experts
Ever wish you had a moment to bend your doctor’s ear? Or gain some insight into the latest fitness trends? The Health Expo offers the opportunity to not only speak with medical providers and clinic professionals, but elite athletes as well. You can also participate in healthy living seminars and listen to health panel discussions.
Just about everyone has something to improve with respect to his or her health. That’s why CDPHP is a major sponsor of this fun and informative event.

I was wondering if there were exhibitor booths available for the Health and Fitness Expo?
Lisa Stratton
Thank you for your inquiry, Amanda. The Health & Fitness Expo traditionally has been held in conjunction with the annual Freihofer’s Run for Women in Albany, and it has always included vendor booths. As CDPHP is not a sponsor of the Expo this year, you would need to check with the race organizers to confirm whether vendor space is available. Thank you for your interest; I hope you are successful in tracking down the information you need.
