Staying Sharp with CDPHP Wellness Classes


Ron White has always known the importance of staying healthy.

In 23 years working at the University at Albany, Ron coached swimming, diving, track and field, and cross country. He also taught wellness classes, helping students to make positive lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet.

Now, at age 73, Ron is more committed than ever to keeping himself healthy. A couple of years ago, Ron read through a CDPHP newsletter he received in the mail, and found a list of free wellness classes. He tried one out, and immediately appreciated what he learned.

“It’s a great way for me to keep myself sharp.”

Ron has attended free classes offered by CDPHP about nutrition, mindfulness, becoming a caregiver, and even about fraud. One immediate benefit? Ron trimmed his waist line when he attended six sessions of a weight management program.

Ron likes that the instructors are well-prepared, and he says they come to the classes with valuable reference materials and plenty of information to take home.

“They serve the needs of a diverse part of the population. They’re free for people to come in and learn. As an educator, I think that’s important.”

In retirement, Ron stays busy certifying lifeguards for local swimming areas and state parks, and also as an aquatics instructor. Even with a packed schedule, Ron still finds time to incorporate CDPHP wellness classes into his life. He knows how much they can help, and recommends the classes for anyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle, and in turn, a longer life.

“I would encourage people to come to the programs, take the resources home, and go from there.”
