Frontline Heroes
The COVID-19 crisis turned our collective worlds upside down. With little warning, the virus, and its associated economic upheaval, caused profound change in our personal and professional lives.
While many of us were allowed to work from home to stop the spread of the virus, health care workers across the globe – and right here in the Capital Region – rose to the occasion, risking their own personal safety to protect others.
This year, CDPHP Top Doctors presents Frontline Heroes: The People’s Choice Awards. Nominated by their patients and peers, these individuals are being recognized for showing compassion, care, and concern in the midst of a global pandemic.

John D. Bennett, MD, FACC, FACP About the Author
John D. Bennett, MD, FACC, FACP, is president and CEO of Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan, Inc. (CDPHP), an award-winning, physician aligned, not-for-profit health plan based in Albany, NY. Bennett has held the position since 2008 after serving more than 10 years as chair, vice chair, and board member for CDPHP. During his tenure, CDPHP has been ranked among the top-performing health plans in New York and the nation, most recently named #1 in Customer Satisfaction in the 2023 J.D. Power Member Health Plan Study. Under his leadership, CDPHP has also become known as a model employer regionally and nationally and was recently named among the top five Best Companies to Work for in New York by the Society for Human Resource Management, as well as Forbes Best-in-State Employers 2022. Prior to joining CDPHP, Bennett served as founding member and CEO of Prime Care Physicians, PLLC. During his tenure, he co-led a team of 25 cardiologists and helped grow the practice to a 100-physician multi-specialty group. Bennett is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Internal Medicine, with subspecialties in internal medicine and cardiology. He earned his medical degree at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, and a Bachelor of Science degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Bennett completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Albany Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. Bennett is currently board chair for the Center for Economic Growth and the Capital Region Chamber, and vice chair for the Palace Theatre. Bennett also serves on the boards of the New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC), the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP), America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Russell Sage Colleges. Bennett is a member of the New York Public Health and Health Planning Council where he helps shape decisions related to New York State's public health and health care delivery system. Well-known locally and nationally for advancing health care innovation, Bennett was recently named to Crain’s New York Business 2021 Notable in Health Care, as well as the Albany Business Review’s Power 50 list.

Trying to find a new physician in the Saratoga area. All I need is a list of physicians who are in this area, who are HMO doctors, and are taking new patients. so far I’ve found this website to be useless in this simple pursuit.

MARK CONNOLLY
I have a high deductible plan via CDPHP. I need a diagnostic test and have been calling imaging centers and hospitals to get cost estimates. They typically ask for the CPT code what plan I have, then look it up and tell me the “agreed to price”. Is there a page on the CDPHP website I can just enter the diagnostic code and you can direct me to whomever is the low cost provider for this procedure? Thank you. Mark Connolly

Top Doctors report is almost completely absent of doctors, instead listing facilities with no links to any of them. All in all, this is really not useful. I was honestly curious to see such a report, and how it was generated, etc. But this? There is more devoted to the About Author section than anything else.
If CDPHP wants its subscribers to engage with CDPHP, this is a good lesson in how to do it very poorly.

Dr. Michelle Abis is a uniquely caring physician, apart from being at the very top in her field of expertise. In stead of relying on yesterday’s news, she researched, if anything new or anyone new with a more advanced expertise was available, who would better serve my needs after a diagnosis of thymoma. Dr. Abis has worked with thoracic surgeons, of course, over the years, but she didn’t give me just a name of a doctor, whom she knew and had referred patients to before. No she approached my case, as if she knew no thoracic surgeon. And she didn’t know Dr. Borah, but based on what she read and learned about him, that’s who she recommended and I am most sincerely grateful and feel ever so lucky being now under the care of the two of them.
